![]() Nuclear power comes from the energy that is released in the process of nuclear fission. But when a neutron strikes the nucleus of certain atoms-uranium, for example-this atomic center can break into pieces in a process called nuclear fission, releasing enormous energy in the form of heat and radiation. And within each atom is a nucleus, a tightly packed core that holds protons and neutrons bound together by what’s known as the strong nuclear force. Atoms make up all matter: the device you’re reading this on, the surface it’s resting on, and the air you’re breathing. Nuclear energy comes from the core of an atom. Nuclear Power Plants in the United States. They realized that this made possible a chain reaction with an unprecedented energy yield. Frisch and Meitner carried out further experiments which showed that the U-235 fission yielded an enormous amount of energy, and that the fission yielded at least two neutrons per neutron absorbed in the interaction. She was the first to realize that Hahn's barium and other lighter products from the neutron bombardment experiments were coming from the fission of U-235. Upon Hitler's invasion of Austria, she had been forced to flee to Sweden where she and Otto Frisch, her nephew, continued to work on the neutron bombardment problem. When they finally published the results in 1939, they came to the attention of Lise Meitner, an Austrian-born physicist who had worked with Hahn on his nuclear experiments. When they finally identified one of the products as Barium-141, they were reluctant to publish the finding because it was so unexpected. Rather than the heavy elements they expected, they got several unidentified products. In the 1930s, German physicists/chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman attempted to create transuranic elements by bombarding uranium with neutrons. The only other isotope which is known to undergo fission upon slow-neutron bombardment is uranium-233. Thorium-232 is fissionable, so could conceivably be used as a nuclear fuel. Some of the nuclear reactors at Hanford, Washington and the Savannah-River Plant (SC) are designed for the production of bomb-grade plutonium-239. U-238 has a small probability for spontaneous fission and also a small probability of fission when bombarded with fast neutrons, but it is not useful as a nuclear fuel source. Uranium-238, which makes up 99.3% of natural uranium, is not fissionable by slow neutrons. ![]() ![]() Plutonium-239 can be produced by " breeding" it from uranium-238. Plutonium-239 is also fissionable by bombardment with slow neutrons, and both it and uranium-235 have been used to make nuclear fission bombs. While uranium-235 is the naturally occuring fissionable isotope, there are other isotopes which can be induced to fission by neutron bombardment. Even with the necessity of enrichment, it still takes only about 3 kg of natural uranium to supply the energy needs of one American for a year. After reduction, the uranium must go through an isotope enrichment process. Uranium is found as uranium oxide which when purified has a rich yellow color and is called "yellowcake". For light-water reactors, the fuel must be enriched to 2.5-3.5% U-235. style light-water reactors, although it is used in Canadian CANDU reactors. The 0.72% U-235 is not sufficient to produce a self-sustaining critical chain reaction in U.S. Natural uranium is composed of 0.72% U-235 (the fissionable isotope), 99.27% U-238, and a trace quantity 0.0055% U-234. A single fission event can yield over 200 million times the energy of the neutron which triggered it! A fast neutron will not be captured, so neutrons must be slowed down by moderation to increase their capture probability in fission reactors. In one of the most remarkable phenomena in nature, a slow neutron can be captured by a uranium-235 nucleus, rendering it unstable toward nuclear fission. Other fissionable isotopes which can be induced to fission by slow neutrons are plutonium-239, uranium-233, and thorium-232. The fission of U-235 in reactors is triggered by the absorption of a low energy neutron, often termed a "slow neutron" or a "thermal neutron". For elements lighter than iron, fusion will yield energy. If the mass of the fragments is equal to or greater than that of iron at the peak of the binding energy curve, then the nuclear particles will be more tightly bound than they were in the uranium nucleus, and that decrease in mass comes off in the form of energy according to the Einstein equation. If a massive nucleus like uranium-235 breaks apart (fissions), then there will be a net yield of energy because the sum of the masses of the fragments will be less than the mass of the uranium nucleus.

Can My Boss, Manager, Or The IT Department See My Passwords? Even if you are talking privately to someone at another company, your private Slack messages are not private from your employer. Your employer can read private IMs or Slack messages. However, in general, the law does not allow an employer to monitor text conversations on an employee’s personal cell phone. If you have a cell phone that your company issued, your employer may have the right to monitor those text messages. However, court rulings on this topic often depend on a variety of factors. Laws are still murky on this topic, and not all employers have the necessary software. What is more, some employers use keylogger software that even lets them view deleted emails or drafts that have been saved.Īs for whether your employer can read emails sent from a personal account connected to the company network, the answer is less clear. Some companies install software that sends copies of any emails sent to or from employee accounts. These days, it is not uncommon for employers to monitor their employees’ email as a matter of routine. If you are sending emails through a work email address, these are not considered private and your employer may access them freely. If you are using a work computer or sending emails on the workplace network, your employer can indeed read your email. 2 The laws get a bit more complex when tracking your activity on a personal device that is not connected to the network, though it is not necessarily illegal. They can also monitor you if you are using a work computer but are not connected to the local WiFi. If you have a connection to the company network, your employer has the right to track your internet activity. Access now depends more on software and VPNs on your device, and device ownership, more than on physical location. ![]() Can My Employer See What Websites I View If I’m Not On Their WiFi? The move to work-from-home has complicated the question of worker monitoring. In this case, the answer to “Can my employer see what websites I visit?” - even if you are using a personal computer - is yes. However, things get a bit more complicated when browsing on a public network, even if you are using a private computer. The law does not let your employer monitor your personal browsing history - that is, websites you visit or information you store on your personal computer. ![]() If you’re wondering, “Does my employer monitor my browsing?” and asking about the legality of the issue 1, that’s a bit of a bigger beast. Unfortunately, erasing your browsing history doesn’t change anything. You should assume that your employer checks your browsing history regularly. Your employer can indeed see your browsing history through remote employee monitoring software. The short answer to this question is - yes. Can My Boss or Manager See My Browsing History? Who knows, perhaps this is the film Hollyweird needed to make back around 2010-ish to give us another massive pool resurgence with the general public as was the after-effect of The Hustler '61, and The Color of Money '86. Two Chlorine and two hydrogen atoms establish covalent connections with the central carbon atom as a result, leaving the carbon atom with no lone pair. If you’re interested in learning more about the chlorine octet rule, please see in our previous post. To complete the octet of the chlorine atom, a chlorine terminal atom requires one electron. Carbon has four outermost valence electrons, indicating that it possesses four electrons in its outermost shell, whereas chlorine only has seven valence electrons in its outermost shell. The central atom is carbon, which is bordered on four terminals with two chlorine atoms, two hydrogen atoms, and no lone pair on the carbon in the tetrahedral geometry. The net dipole moment of the CH2Cl2 molecule is 1.6 D. The CH2Cl2 molecule has a permanent dipole moment due to an unequal charge distribution of negative and positive charges. As a result, it has the permanent dipole moment. It has a difference in electronegativity values between carbon and chlorine atoms, with carbon’s pull being less than chlorine’s terminal in the CH2Cl2 molecule. The molecule of dichloromethane (with tetrahedral molecular geometry) is tilted, the bond angles between chlorine, carbon, and hydrogen are 109.5 degrees. The CH2Cl2 molecule is classified as a polar molecule. ![]() The carbon-chlorine bonds in dichloromethane(CH2Cl2), for example, are polarised toward the more electronegative chlorine, and because both bonds have the same size and located around four terminals with two chlorine and two hydrogen atoms, their sum is non zero due to the CH2Cl2 molecule’s bond dipole moment and the lone pairs of electron on two chlorine atoms. The geometry of the CH2Cl2 molecule can then be predicted using the Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory (VSEPR Theory), which states that molecules will choose the Ch2Cl2 geometrical shape in which the electrons have from one another.įinally, you must add their bond polarities to compute the strength of the C-Cl bond (dipole moment properties of the CH2Cl2 molecule). The CH2Cl2 Lewis structure is a diagram that illustrates the number of valence electrons and bond electron pairs in the CH2Cl2 molecule. The first step is to sketch the Lewis structure of the CH2Cl2 molecule, to add valence electron around the carbon atom the second step is to add valence electrons to the two chlorine and two hydrogen atoms, and the final step is to combine the step1 and step2 to get the CH2Cl2 Lewis Structure. ![]() Key Points To Consider When Drawing The CH2Cl2 StructureĪ three-step approach for drawing the CH2Cl2 Lewis structure can be used. A molecule that has several resonance structures is more stable than one with fewer. The net sum of valid resonance structures is defined as a resonance hybrid, which represents the overall delocalization of electrons within the molecule. Resonance structures are used when one Lewis structure for a single molecule cannot fully describe the bonding that takes place between neighboring atoms relative to the empirical data for the actual bond lengths between those atoms. These structures are written with a double-headed arrow between them, indicating that none of the Lewis structures accurately describes the bonding but that the actual structure is an average of the individual resonance structures. Resonance is a mental exercise and method within the Valence Bond Theory of bonding that describes the delocalization of electrons within molecules.
